Confirmation of Internship-Preparing for Departure

Hi!! So this is my first official post and first time blogging.. I am excited to not only provide family and friends an insight into what it is I will be/am doing on my journeys in Africa, but also to be able to document my experiences and reflect on my learning's along the way.

I have been accepted as an Environmental Protection Officer with the Canadian Cooperative Association, partnering with the Uganda Cooperative Alliance (UCA). The key goal of the project is to further strengthen the capacity of the UCA and to improve food security in Uganda. I will be working on designing and implementing a reforestation initiative, doing some training workshops on improving marketing of crops, monitoring and evaluating the positive natural resource initiatives in the focus communities and how these approaches can be up scaled across Uganda, developing some training manuals and participating in existing project workshops with community beneficiaries. My knowledge of the detailed project description is very vague at this point. I will update the blog as I find out more information.

Being offered this internship came with big smiles, as food security is the sector I want to place focus on in my career path. With the reduced supply of food due to population pressure/climate change, the ever growing grip of corporate control of our food system from the seeds to what ends up on our plates, to the increasing price of fuel and its' impact on fertilizer costs/transport, to the increasing attention placed on transferring crop production to be processed as biofuels--it is clear that our global food system is on the brink/already in a quagmire. Innovative solutions will need to be forged and I am hoping I can, in any way possible, contribute towards some of those solutions along my career path.

I look forward to documenting my journey and to share my experiences with you all!!

Peace and Love
